X-ray emission from Saturn

ROSAT: Exposure with ROSAT PSPC (5600 sec)

Chandra: Exposure with Chandra ACIS-S (70,000 sec)

Motivated by a marginal dection of X-rays with the ROSAT satellite an observation with Chandra was scheduled. The results were that mainly equatorial emission was detected, which was unexpected, since strong magnetic fields rather suggest polar, auroral emission.
A collection of images was created by Vadim Burwitz

The publication of these results caught great attention in the media, see collection of Press Releases.
